Kanye West- Graduation

Despite the fact that i found Kanye West to be unbelievably cocky on the VMAs the other night, when i saw that he had a new CD out. (i didnt realize he was releasing a new CD) i bought it. You see, cockiness can be made up for with talent... see Roger Waters of Pink Floyd for example... a very big headed guy, yes he is... but he's also beyond brilliant.
Anyway. I've listened to it once so far... it's quite good. It's kind of interesting because he is really very honest about the fact that he is cocky and was sellin out all over... and the music is good. This one even has a different kind of sound than th last two. He's still the man.

i listened to a free CD i got afterward, had a few good rappers on it like ghostface, the streets, and there were some names i recognized, and it was free, but it was all that club dance rap. like hipster stuff. i dont really like it. i like the streets, but not the others like bloc party and whoever else was on there... skank rock? i dunno.

i love alternative rap and hip hop, and some GLBTQ hip hop, but the very gay-man- club hopper hip hop is not for me

I also saw the movie Adventures in Babysitting on sale for $7 and i haven't seen it in a long time. Its an excellent 80's movie and i'm looking forward to watching it tonight.

Baby Baby, Babysittin' Blues............

here are a few queer hip hop artists you might enjoy...

Skim, God-Des and She, and Feloni

I'm sure they all have myspace pages. And maybe you've heard of them before, but just thought I'd throw the info out there.

Way back in the early 90's when the gangsta rap started becoming more prominent, I more or less lost interest in hip-hop in general. The last few years I've been getting back into some music of that era, but out of the newer school of rap it's really only been mc chris and Katastrophe that I've gotten into.

Oddly enough, I'm not big into God-des and She although I find it amusing that they're staying stuff about women that the straight male rappers have been saying for decades. Funny that!

i was the same way. i gave up rap for years. i liked early stuff like young mc, dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince, salt n peppa. i got into NWA when i as in midle school which was not great for my self esteem. then it was all about ice cube, ice t, dr dre', tupac, biggy, east vs west and i was not into any of it. it was too fast, degrating, violent, not to mention that those were the grunge years and i as much more into alice in chains, pearl jam, nirvana, stone templ pilots, smashing pumpkins, tool, nine inch nails, violent femmes... there was some rap out at the time that was more grunge-rap like beastie boys ill comunication and check your head, cypress hill, and arrested developement were neither grunge rap nor gangsta and i liked them. oh, and of course rage against the machine, red hot chili peppers and faith no more had mixed rap with hard rock, and did it well. Then those rock-rap groups like limp bizkit, linkin park and all that shit came out. wasnt into that. in the late 90's early 2000's i listened to mainly grunge, alternative and folk music like ani difranco. also i've liked classic rock since i was 12... like pink floyd, the oors, jimi hendrix, etc.
In about 2002 i think it was, i heard an Outkast song on alternative rock radio. I bought their CD and one thing led to another and i fell in love with hip hop. Dead Prez, Eminem (who i hated at first), Tupac (who i used to think was all gangsta and hate filled but learned he was briliant) then i found Pigeon John, Blackalicious, Common, Jedi Mind Tricks, Gym Class Heroes. About 3 yhear ago i stumbled on a compilation of Boston hip hop, and fell in love with the Perceptionists, Breeze Evahflowin', Kreators, Mr Lif, Akrobatik, Chan, Edan, Skitzofreniks, etc. I've read books on hip hop, studied the lyrics, compared some of the best rap albums to some of the bes rock albums. i'm just in love with it.
However, even though i'll occaisionally listen to it, i'm less into Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Ludacris, TI, etc. They cn definately all be good, but i'm not into the mainstream gangsta rap. i still love NWA though. It helps me see my past.
I'm not hugey into God-des and She. i like Bitch and Animal about half the time... but i love Katastrophe. i also like Q-Boy and Jen-Ro is really good too. oh and Deep Dickcollective.
also some great British stuff like The Streets, Life, Dizzy Rascal, Lady Sovereign.
i am a true music consumer.

1. if champian were not called champion, i would have thought he was saying "did u realize that you were Italian in their eyes?"
i think the album has a really different sound. i mean, it seems like he tried out some southern sound in the album, so its not new, but neat how he works his style in with it.
first GREAT song on there is "cant tell me nothing". i love the sound of it. the woman going ooooh in the background with a slowed down gangsta sound. really good.
Barry Bonds seems to be an Eminem dis in the end with all that "shady & crazy" stuff. Interesting, and because i have my theory that eminem and dre are a gay couple behind the scenes, i think Kanye could be commenting on that, but i dunno. thats my theory.
anyway, weather or not my theory is true, i do like barry bonds, drunk and hot girls i have to say, i really enjoy it and the "poppin'lock" kind of sound is cool. flashy lights is okay, Everything i Am is really good. the lounge piano sound mixed with that slow scratch is really sweet, plus the lyrics are really honest. i dont like the high pitched kid singing sound in the glory but its ok.
Homecoming is great in a bunch of ways. i love that piano in the background. it is so familiar sounding. i gotta look more into that to see what he was sampling, but this great song about going home mixed with the familiar feeling the piano/sample? gives, it makes it very powerful.
i like the big brother song but its a bit confusing for me to follow. it feels a bit like "my best friend's sister's boyfriend's adopted brother told me..." but its a pretty cool song.
so yeah, allogether its just great stuff

me too. it's in my car. i usually skip to song 4 and listen from there though. his last album was his best i think. but i still love graduation. i'm wondering if i will be buying any music this month... of course i will, but what? any suggestions?
not like i need them... i get to newbury comics and in 15 minutes have 10 cds in my hand and i play the "what 3 or 4 do i want the most?" game... which takes me an hour or two, cuz i continue to browse he store and find more.
but sugestions are helpful and do usually eventually get bought.
peace
