Songs About Mental Illness. Part 1

Because it is the 1 year anniversary of my nervous breakdown and has been almost a year since i have been in the psych ward. It is the longest i have gone without going into the hospital in many years.
I have Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or C-PTSD. My first hospitalization was when i was 15 years old, in 1993. I have been hospitalized about 100 times, no exaggeration. The psych wards were like a second home to me. I used to feel safe there, but things changed and i feel safer not being there.
Over the years, going in and out of the hospitals, i have run into a lot of the same people who also went in and out of the psych ward. I know that at least 4 of the people i knew well have committed suicide. It is a painful way to live. I'm glad i am doing better, but i know i may fall again, so i have to always be prepared.
Peace. Enjoy these songs.

Ohhhh, I love that song "Crazy Mary" by Pearl Jam. Back in the 90s, that song came on the radio all the time, and I love that song. Thank you for bringing me back to my teenage years.

One of my favorite songs about mental illness is "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead.

Victoria Williams must be a tough lady to deal with multiple sclerosis. Also, you just inspired me to listen to Eddie Vedder's beautiful song "Society."

I had no idea that James Taylor wrote Fire & Rain about mental illness! Whoa! I understand about dealing with chronic illness. My physical issues are leading to annual trips to the ER. I felt safe in the first hospital, but not the second. And nobody cures me or gives me a better diagnosis than IBS. It actually has made me cranky enough to start taking psych meds (Lamictal) for the moods. I can't take anti-depressants (which actually treat IBS too) because of my family history of Bipolar. Being sick sucks, but at least we have our art!

sorry to hear you have been dealing with chronic illness. that sucks.
yeah, james taylor actually wrote fire and rain when he was at mclean hospital. he has been there many times. i heard he was there when i was there once actually, but he goes to the pavilion... the rich people's ward. mclean is where girl interrupted took place. sylvia plath and anne sexton were on the ward where girl interrupted took place. that is usually the ward i went to. it is coed now. it is a good ward. the last time i was at mclean they sent me to a hellhole though.
